Job Description

Peace Corps Rwanda conducts a comprehensive Pre‑Service Training (PST) to prepare TEFL Trainees for effective classroom teaching and school community integration. Under the supervision of the Education Program Manager the TEFL Technical Trainer will provide specialized technical support across curriculum materials review, structured lesson observations, delivery of TEFL technical sessions, and guided teaching practicum support—ensuring alignment with national curriculum expectations and Peace Corps standards of practice. The TEFL Technical Trainer ensures quality and coherence of TEFL training materials, lesson plans, and assessment tools; strengthens trainee readiness through feedback and coaching; delivers technical sessions aligned with PST outcomes; and facilitates teaching practicum support, mentoring, and reflective practice. Note: This is an intermittent position.

Key Deliverables

  • Review Peace Corps Rwanda TEFL documents, national curriculum documents, and training materials.
  • Review observation tools and feedback templates.
  • Conduct structured observations of trainee lessons and micro-teaching.
  • Capture evidence using standardized observation tools.
  • Provide timely, actionable oral and written feedback.
  • Coordinate observation coverage with other trainers.
  • Facilitate technical sessions on core TEFL topics including lesson planning, CLT, literacy integration, differentiation, and assessment.
  • Model and demonstrate effective instructional practices.
  • Align training sessions with PST calendar.
  • Collaborate with practicum schools to set expectations and schedules.
  • Guide trainees through practicum orientation and protocols.
  • Provide mentoring and coaching during practicum.
  • Co-facilitate reflective practice sessions and debriefs.
  • Communicate logistical and programmatic concerns to the Education Program Manager.
  • Support development and improvement of TEFL competencies and training materials.
  • Promote safety and security policies and reporting responsibilities.
  • Submit invoices bi-weekly in accordance with Peace Corps procedures.

Professional Qualifications

Industry Qualification
Educational Services Familiarity with Rwanda’s national curriculum, syllabi, and school protocols. Strong ICT in Education knowledge (Microsoft 365, data management, feedback reports). Expertise in structured observation frameworks. Ability to review curricula, session plans, slide decks, and assessment tools. Ability to draft individualized action plans based on observation data. Minimum 5 years of English language teaching at primary, secondary, or TTC level. Minimum 5 years of designing and facilitating teacher professional development or coaching. Experience collaborating with training teams for aligned content delivery. Experience conducting structured observations and providing feedback. Formal education in TEFL/TESOL or Applied Linguistics. Bachelor’s degree holders must have minimum 5 years relevant professional experience. Master’s degree in TEFL/TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or related field preferred. Professional proficiency in English required; working knowledge of Kinyarwanda highly desirable.
