Terms of reference for the recruitment of the Food & Beverage trainer 

Position:  Trainer 

Organisation : Maison Shalom (MS)

1. Background 

Maison Shalom is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded by Mrs. Marguerite Barankitse in 1993 in Burundi, in Ruyigi, to meet the needs of populations in distress during a conflict and post-conflict period. 

Since 2015, it has been registered in Rwanda to support the efforts of other actors who share the same values ​​of dignity and compassion for humanity, especially towards vulnerable people. 

Maison Shalom operates in various areas, including education, economic support, and psychosocial support, within a humanitarian framework to strengthen community capacity. It provides a multi-sectoral emergency response to displaced persons and/or refugees, returnees, and the host population. 

The main area of ​​intervention is Mahama camp, located in Kirehe district. 

As part of the Education Support Program, in addition to supporting primary, secondary, and university students, the program also includes a vocational training component. This includes several career paths, including culinary arts, food & beverage, carpentry, and shoemaking. 

It is within the framework of ensuring quality professional training adapted to the needs of the beneficiaries that Maison Shalom wishes to recruit a   Food & Beverage trainer  . 

2. Purpose of the position 

Under the supervision of the Head of the Education Program, the Food & Beverage trainer's main mission is to provide learners with the necessary theoretical and practical skills related to Food & Beverage professions in accordance with professional standards. 

He/She ensures that learners' autonomy, creativity and technical rigor are developed, while providing educational support adapted to their needs. 

He/She also contributes to the professionalization of learners and their integration into the hotel and catering sector.

He/She will be responsible for training and supervising learners for a period of six (6) months without interruption, followed by supervision of practical training over a period of two (2) months.

Key Deliverables

Without being limiting, the main tasks of the Food & Beverage trainer are as follows: 

  • To impart technical and practical skills to learners in food service and beverage management: introduce and train in basic and advanced techniques, encourage creativity and innovation, demonstrate techniques for serving, plating and presenting dishes. 
  • Prepare and lead theoretical and practical courses according to a defined program: design training programs, develop teaching materials, implement various teaching methods. 
  • Supervise and support learners: personalized monitoring according to the level and needs of each learner, continually assess their skills, encourage discipline, rigor and a sense of work. 
  • Adapt teaching methods to different learning levels and profiles. ∙ Ensure safety, hygiene and maintenance of equipment and the workshop. ∙ Participate in the development or improvement of training programs. 

Essential Qualities

Essential Qualities
  • University degree in hotel and catering, Food & Beverage management or related field, level A0 or Master. 
  • Significant professional experience in the Food & Beverage sector. ∙ Experience in training or supervising learners. 
  • Excellent mastery of classic and modern culinary techniques. ∙ Mastery of Food & Beverage tools and equipment. 
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and Kinyarwanda. 

B. Desirable skills

  •  Experience working with a humanitarian NGO or business.
  • Excellent ability to work in a team and by objectives. 
  • Excellent teaching and communication skills.

C. Behavioral skills

  • Adaptability to the pace of learners. 
  • Ability to convey instructions well. 
  • Promote collaboration and mutual assistance between learners.
