Job Description

The role contributes to EMERGENCY’s communication and media activities in Uganda with sporadic trips also to the project in Sierra Leone, supporting both content production and press office activities in alignment with the organization’s communication strategy. The Field Communication Officer reports functionally to the Communication Team in Milan (HQ) and hierarchically to the Country Director of the Children’s Surgical Hospital.

Key Deliverables

Content Production

· Collects stories from patients, national and international staff, and the surrounding context, producing written testimonies suitable for communication and fundraising purposes.

· Produces and acquires photographs and audiovisual materials in compliance with data protection regulations and EMERGENCY internal policies, for communication, documentation, awareness, and fundraising campaigns.

· Produces videos (events, interviews, context, and testimonies) for EMERGENCY’s communication and fundraising departments.

· Identifies communication opportunities and proposes tailored press releases to the central Communication Office.

· Drafts press releases related to public events, hospital updates, extraordinary cases, and relevant news for dissemination to local and international media.

· Supports interactions between local stakeholders and journalists/photographers/videographers, attending interviews, facilitating field work, and providing additional material when needed.

· Contributes to the production of information materials in local languages (posts, flyers, posters), coordinating with the central editorial and digital teams.

· Supports the Editorial Area with information gathering and, when possible, drafting texts for editorial products (Activity Reports, Quarterly Magazine, Social Report).

· Ensures that all communication materials produced for the local context follow EMERGENCY’s internal approval processes, including coordination with the Country Director when required.

 

Press Office

· Supports communication planning at the local level, including digital channels.

· Manages requests from national and international media, gathering stories, data, and information.

· Accompanies international journalists during project visits, supporting agenda planning and logistical coordination.

· Oversees production of communication material by EMERGENCY’s partner organizations, making sure the material aligns with EMERGENCY principles.

· Develops and maintains a mailing list of Ugandan journalists and maps the local media landscape.

· Maintains regular relationships with media actors and proactively proposes stories and content to ensure EMERGENCY’s visibility.

· Monitors internal hospital news, identifying relevant information for the national press office and the Italy-based Field Communication Officer.

· Organizes press conferences and media events (invites, accreditation, on-site management, interviews, follow-ups).

· Maintains an up-to-date database of journalists, media actors, and influencers.

· Supports media training sessions for national and international staff.

· When necessary, may act as spokesperson with local and foreign media.

· Maintains and updates strategic media reports (ownership, political affiliation, key actors, etc.).

· Monitors national media and political discourse across traditional, digital, and informal channels, identifying trends relevant to EMERGENCY.

· Shares daily press reviews (local and international) pertaining to the Uganda project.

· Collects project data and statistics for the Press Office and other communication departments.

Professional Qualifications

Industry Qualification
Media, Advertising And Branding University Degree in Media or Journalism Studies; · Minimum 3 years of continuous experience in communication or journalism; · Excellent written and oral proficiency in English and Luganda; · Ability to produce high-quality audiovisual materials using semi-professional equipment (Handycam, DSLR, Mirrorless), including external microphones; · Ability to produce high-quality photographic content (DSLR, Mirrorless); · Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills for journalistic content and press releases; · Strong organizational skills for maintaining an orderly and updated media archive; · Ability to work independently and meet deadlines set by the Press Office and the Italy-based Field Communication Officer; · Competence in photo and video editing software (Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere or equivalents); · Excellent command of MS Office (Word, Excel); · Understanding of social media publishing and monitoring mechanisms (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X.com, etc.); · Knowledge of humanitarian issues in Uganda and familiarity with the local media landscape;

Essential Qualities

Essential Qualities

· Previous experience with NGOs or in the humanitarian/health sector;

· Experience working with local media and an existing network of contacts;

· Knowledge of Swahili;

· Having access to personal audiovisual equipment is considered an asset, although not a requirement.
