Who we are:

The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund is proud to manage one of the most comprehensive and enduring datasets on any animal species. Recently, the Fossey Fund has expanded its research to include additional gorilla groups in Volcanoes National Park, aligning with our strategic goal of achieving 100% research coverage within the next five (5) years. These data are essential for advancing scientific knowledge of gorillas and informing conservation strategies for this endangered species.

To support this effort, we are seeking highly collaborative individuals with experience in training delivery to join our team as Training Coordinator. This position will be based at the Ellen DeGeneres Campus located in Kinigi Sector – Musanze District/ Northern Province. The successful candidate will work closely with the Community Engagement team and the Community Development Officer.

Position: Training Coordinator (1) – Community Engagement Program

Job Purpose:

The Training Coordinator will be responsible for planning and delivering high quality trainings across the Community Engagement Program (CEP) and collecting and disseminating learning outcomes and trends. Specifically, this role will focus on organizing and leading high-quality trainings for local government and training and management of community-based facilitators (CBFs) for the Village Vitality Project, a community driven development and environmental stewardship initiative and partnership with the Government of Rwanda and an international NGO. The Training Coordinator oversees project implementation within a sector through regular check-ins with local government officials and other trainers, coordinates village, cell and sector level meetings and overall project implementation.

This role will also support other training needs in the CEP including environmental education for primary and secondary students and a Girls in Conservation curriculum. Key skills include leading training, coordination and collaboration with key partners and stakeholders, planning and scheduling across multiple projects and timelines, managing trainers (CBF Champions), and utilizing training evaluation frameworks. The Training Coordinator will work closely with the CEP team, local trainers and local government officials to evaluate the performance of CBFs and to determine additional support needed.

  • The Training Coordinator will directly report to The Community Development Officer.

Key Deliverables

Project Start

  • Take the lead in CBF Selection with CBF Champions
  • Organize and prepare CBF Training
  • Prepare and lead the local government/CBF Trainings
  • Register Communities on CommCare for monitoring and reporting purposes

Weekly:

  • Check in with local government representatives and CBF Champions
  • Ensure CBFs are submitting accurate and timely weekly reports via CommCare
  • Visit village meeting sites to conduct quality control assessments
  • Provide weekly report to Sector Officials
  • Follow up on highlighted issues on community weekly report
  • During Proposal Development:
    • Ensure information exchange from village to Proposal Review Committee (PRC) and PRC back to village
    • Coordinate review of proposal pieces by PRC
    • Act as liaison between PRC, CBF, local government, and village in communicating proposal review and approval updates

Monthly:

  • Organize and prepare CBF Meetings at cell level
  • Collect and submit Technical Advisor (TA) reports to Community Development Officer

Quarterly:

  • Assist Community Development Officer with planning District Task Force meetings
  • Assessing the quality of CBF delivery at weekly community meetings

Annually:

  • Coordinate the Leadership Committee Training in each village
  • Organize Village exchange visits, 1 per sector
  • Prepare and Lead the Cell pathway selection meeting
  • Coordinate subproject proposal development and review with local government, CBFs, and the PRC

Essential Qualities

Essential Qualities
  • Bachelor’s degree in related fields (education, community development, program/project management, international development, conservation)
    A minimum of 2 years of work experience in a related field
  • Experience facilitating, training, coordinating logistics for training or events and conducting training evaluations
  • Technical skills with MS Office Suite and Google Suite including basic Excel functions
  • Strong training and leadership skills; demonstrated ability to supervise staff
  • Knowledge of and working experience with different training methodologies
  • Excellent English and Kinyarwanda, written and oral communication
  • Demonstrated discernment and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated flexibility, adaptability, and ability to perform and collaborate in complex environments
  • Ability to travel to the field 3-4 days a week
  • Outstanding diplomacy and communication skills in individual, team, and large-group settings
  • Possess problem-solving skills, be a self-starter and a team player
  • Knowledge and expertise in areas including community driven development, human centered design, program development, and/or environmental education
