Job Purpose:

  • Maintain the standards of the underwriting department thus enhancing the image of Hollard.
  • Ensure all administrative functions within the underwriting team are adhered to by verifying rating principles, legal requirements, reinsurance requirements and mandates.
  • Process all complex and referral business.
  • Strong focus on reinsurance placement and renewal business.
  • Manage all the implementation of all technical directives for the branch
  • Process all technical underwriting tasks assigned, within the set standards required by the company thus contributing to the productivity of the underwriting department as set out within parameters delegated to you from time to time.
  •  Ensure strong working relationship between all stakeholders.

Key Deliverables

  • Underwriting: Analyse qualitative and quantitative data prepared by the underwriting team to provide quality assurance, ensuring capacity by utilizing the rating tool, placing RI, loss ratio analysis, and applying for surveys and review thereof. Decline undesirable risks.
  • Renewals: Support Renewal Team & Broker Consultants to meet goals for volume and value of quality new business quoted and written within company guidelines, by managing large renewals as mandated by Team Leader: Technical underwriting & Underwriting.
  • Processing: Ad-hoc audit and monitoring of underwriting processing in accordance with company guidelines and all transactions assigned by the Team Leader: Technical Underwriting & Underwriting
  • Complete transactions within delegated authority limits and within set standards/guidelines and service level agreements.
  • Quality assessment: Assessment of all high risk policy schedules. Assessment of all broker issued policies and the management of said brokers in terms of non-compliance. Assist with head office referrals. Ensure that undesirable risks are declined.
  • Underwriting audits: Assist with the co-ordination of all underwriting audits, both internal and external through scheduling, follow up of audit requirements and document management/record keeping.
  • Quality control: Quality standards to be adhered to at all times. Tracking of rework through keeping an up to date register of all rework, in order to determine training needs within the underwriting team
  • Customer service: To ensure that customer service standards are maintained in accordance with service level agreements and to assist with technical advice and other assistance over and above the normal underwriting duties.
  • Diary: Daily diary files to be extracted and dealt with, Manage central Technical Underwriting mailbox and ensure that all referrals are addressed within the SLA.
  • Recordkeeping (registers, documents, e-mails etc) to be kept up to date at all times. Ensure that all record keeping in maintained on the Technical Underwriting Drive
  • Effective and timeous communication: Communicate effectively with external parties as well as underwriting team and other departments and respond to queries within 48 hours.
  • General: When required perform any other duties necessary for the operational effectiveness of the company that is within your ability and scope.

Essential Qualities

Essential Qualities

Sound understanding of commercial and industrial (C & I), and personal lines short term insurance

with at least 5 years’ experience


Sound understanding of:

o Underwriting procedure

o Claims procedure

o Insurance terminology

o Legal knowledge (prescription act, insurance act, FAIS)

o Risk management

o Reinsurance and treaties

o Product knowledge

o Financial and credit control knowledge
