Our client, a power infrastructure company, is looking for a Shift Supervisor in Kenya to join their team

THE JOB

As the Shift Supervisor, you will assume overall operational management and responsibility for operational and production of the assigned shift. Supervises and directs personnel in the conduct of required work activities. Operates the units safely, efficiently and in a cost-effective manner and complies with all policies and regulations. Takes direct action to correct abnormal situations and in the event of an emergency, maintains conditions to preserve plant integrity and provide for equipment and personnel safety. Effectively trains the staff under him/her on prudent plant operating procedures and safety requirements for both plant equipment and personnel

Key Deliverables

1. Shift Operations Management  

  • Operate and maintain the plant during the shift work according to company policies and procedures: 
  • Make sure the plant is run within all environmental limits, monitoring all solid waste, liquid and gas discharges from the plant and that all plant personnel follow all safety rules and use all applicable safety equipment 
  • Monitor environmental criteria to try to ensure continuous compliance and adjust operation as necessary. Also, make necessary notifications and documentations 
  • Monitor shift performance and initiate corrective measures as needed to meet expectations with regard to safe and correct work place procedures, housekeeping, competency, etc 
  • Complete general plant operation, maintenance and cleaning of the power plant  
  • Act as the Plant Manager’s representative during night shifts, weekends, and holidays 
  • Maintain plant power production at the output designated by management. Monitor individual power generating unit performance and operations to maximize revenue. 
  • Issue and track work orders as per plant maintenance management system. Lead, direct and monitor troubleshooting of plant problems, prioritizing work orders and coordinating repairs in a timely manner at the optimum cost to the company 
  • Operate plant within the acceptable loading envelope under plant dispatch directives from off taker (KPLC). 
  • Supervise and assist in plant start-up, shutdown and normal operations of the powerplant systems. 
  • Complete and maintain all logs and running records in a clear and concise manner according to guidelines from the Operations Manager or the General Manager. 
  • Provide the relieving shift supervisor with a complete handover, bringing to his attention any operational disturbances, malfunctions, or abnormalities. Update all operations staff, in detail all critical information that transpired during the shift, by log, emails, reports, phone, etc.   
  • Take corrective action during system operational disturbance and/or bring such problems to the attention of the Operations Manager. Assist with outage management and contractor oversight 
  • Authorize plant shutdown or de rating if personally convinced that continued operation would lead to extensive damage of equipment, extensive downtime, or compromise the safety of plant personnel. 
  • Operate and maximumly utilize the solar generating system through load scheduling. 
  • Ability to analyze and interpret critical plant alarms and over solutions. 
  • Communicate effectively the condition of the plant equipment and performance to Operations Manager and the General Manager. 
  • Control of operations department budget through proper utilization of consumables – Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO), Lubricating Oil, Diesel oil and plant chemicals. Operate plant within budget and the established health, safety and environmental standards and assist the Operation Manager in operation budget formulation  
  • Interdepartmental coordination. Seamless and clear interdepartmental coordination of plant activities to ensure plant availability/dispatch is meet as requested by KPLC. Initiate corrective action as needed through appropriate support work groups. 
  • Carry out internal safety audit, record any non-conformity and follow up with the QA-EHS Manager for corrective actions 
  • Holding informative/training sessions with operations shift team and attending safety committee meetings. 

 

2. Operational efficiency and Reporting 

  • Update plant operation data and Create plant statistical   reports as required including Data analysis & Daily reports as per the PPA.  
  • Ensure operations data is accurate, reliable and verifiable and maintain proper operations department records 
  • Track plant statistical performance, production, root cause analysis and make recommendation to Operation manager. 
  • Perform planned and corrective maintenance as directed and as needed and to account for all parts and materials used in the performance of that work. Participate in equipment scheduled maintenance and plant troubleshooting during forced outage 
  • Work closely with laboratory team in chemical dosing for water steam cycle. Review laboratory reports for the purpose of, fuel, water steam, and lube oil system improvement  
  • Implement and maintain plant maintenance management system. 
  • Perform back up on both JDE and network server as assigned by plant manager. 
  • Utilize all tools, equipment, and accessories in such a manner so as to maximize useful operating life 
  • Provide proposals in continuous improvements plans and recommendations as per the dictates of the organization structure.  
  • Recommend changes to environmental management system and quality management system  

 

 

 

3. Health and Safety Management 

  • Responsible for the safe and economic operation and maintenance of the plant during the designated shift.   
  • To comply with all safety regulations including isolation, lock out and tag out. Maintain the plant in a clean and safe condition at all times. 
  • Perform emergency procedures in order to protect personnel and equipment in case of damage or failure of safety deficiencies. 
  • Supervise in the safe and efficient operation of the plant by bringing violations of subordinates to the attention of the Operations Manager. 
  • Supervise the security of the plant utilities on night shift and public holidays and report to the Operations Manager, QA-HSE Manager and the General Manager 

4. Team leadership  

  • Supervise all operations technician in designated shift. 
  • Proper training of shift technician through setting up objectives and using personal performance appraisal tool to identify strength, weakness and recommendations for improvement. 
  • Inspiring and cultivating a strong ethical culture that serves as a model of ethics and integrity within the team. 
  • Motivate the work force, striving to maintain a positive atmosphere, including coaching and counseling. 
  • Personally, check conditions in the control rooms and in the plant and discuss with the shift personnel concerning operating problems. 
  • Any other duties assigned by the management.

Essential Qualities

Essential Qualities
  • Must have at least 8 years of progressive experience in plant operations with at least 2 years in a similar role 
  • Any of the following certifications will be an added advantage: 
  1. MAN-48/60 Engine standard Maintenance. 
  2. MAN- NA/TCA Turbo Charger Standard Maintenance. 
  3. KPLC Switch gear 15Kv – 132Kv certification 
  4. OSHA Certification. 
  5. Fire Marshal Certification. 
  6. Lead auditor in QMS-9001-2015 , EMS 14001 

The ideal candidate should possess the following skills and competencies. 

  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors, including inclement weather 
  •  Ability to lift at least kg regularly, occasionally up to 50kg 
  • Ability to bend and maneuver in confined, cramped areas 
  • Ability to work in hot, noisy and dark environments 
  • Ability to work at heights 
  • Must have an in-depth knowledge of thermal power plant systems, unit operating practices. 
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of thermal power plant related activities for a comparable facility. 
  • Ability to use data-driven metrics to analyze system and operational performance. 
  • Ability to work with high voltage equipment.  
  • Ability to train and supervise power plant operators, technicians, and others in the operation and maintenance of the power plant and related systems 
  • Ability to detect failure before failure through operations data analysis 
  • Ability to productively work independently and as an overall integral team member.  
  • Must have strong communication skills and the ability to effectively organize and facilitate process teams.  
  • Ability to understand contractual issues as they relate to plant operations and maintenance.  
  • Knowledge in Balance of Plant systems start-up, normal operation, emergency, and shutdown of plant. 
  • Thorough knowledge of equipment isolation and LOTO procedures.


Special Benefits for this Position

We are offering the successful candidate a monthly basic salary of KES 145,000 – 200,000 and additional monthly allowances
