Our work in Uganda

In Uganda, ZOA has offices in Kampala, West Nile (Arua), Acholi (Gulu), and Karamoja (Amudat). ZOA Uganda works both in relief and recovery on the themes of food security & livelihoods, education, and conflict management with a special focus on land Rights.

About the Hope Project

In the next 4 years, 6 months (June 2025-Decemberr 2029), ZOA will work with partners to deliver WASH, Land, MHPSS and Livelihoods activities for refugee and host communities. In doing so, ZOA will intentionally seek to build the capacity of these local partners and ensure equitable partnerships when it comes to resource allocation, representation, and decision making.

HOPE project adopts a localization approach which aspires to build strong civil societies, communities and actors, and promoting locally led recovery programs.

This will be achieved through.

  • Household participatory planning where decision making about resources and assets will no longer be left to men alone
  • Certificates of customary ownership offer tenure security for women and their children since all family members can be included on the land registration title
  • MHPSS services will be tailored to meet the specific needs of women, by creating safe spaces for women and girls to come together
  • Water and sanitation service provision will relieve the time burden on women and girls to collect water and care for family members who fall sick from water borne diseases

ZOA Uganda is looking for a Project Coordinator to be based in Kiryandongo Office.

Your challenge

The Project Coordinator, with support from the Deputy Program Manager Acholi is responsible for the day-to-day coordination around the planning and implementation of activities under the project in Kiryandongo refugee settlement and host community in Kiryandongo District.

The Project Coordinator supervises 2 project officers in charge of PIP.

pecial conditions/circumstances

The Project Coordinator will be based at the ZOA field office in Kiryandongo.

Regular travel to field locations, sub counties and for meetings with project stakeholders is expected. The postholder is expected to regularly ride a motorcycle in rural conditions/on unmade roads.

The role is 1.0 FTW (40 hrs./week). Working hours and benefits are outlined in the ZOA Uganda Employee Handbook. Some flexibility on working hours may be required, e.g. for travel at weekends, or during reporting times.

Key Deliverables

General

  • Coordinates project activities in line with the workplan to achieve optimal project outputs and outcomes in line with ZOA/donor procedures and targets.
  • Supports project staff in their different roles and responsibilities to implement the project activities.
  • Ensures project outputs are consistent with the overall project plan, log frame and in line with quality standards and country policies.
  • Oversees and ensures implementation is in line with standards and policies of both ZOA and Government of Uganda.
  • Coordinates with relevant partners in Acholi context on issues around livelihoods
  • Organize regular project review meetings with CVCS committees
  • Support set up of demonstration plots for learning on conservation practices
  • Responsible for beneficiary accountability within the project
  • Provide technical support to the PIP officers for efficient and effective implementation
  • Work with selected Household to ensure their PIP plans are developed and implemented within their available resource.

Reporting

  • Provide inputs to implementation plans and activity/monthly reports.
  • Identify, document lessons learned and best practices.
  • Prepare and submit well written success stories.
  • Contribute to project reports or implementation plans as required by supervisor.
  • Collect monitoring data according to ZOA’s systems and activities in the project.
  • Representation and coordination
  • Actively participate in the required and relevant technical working groups.
  • Participate in relevant coordination meetings concerning the project.
  • Regular coordination with local government actors and relevant district offices; OPM, UNHCR and other NGO partners.
  • Contact with other project specific actors, e.g. consultants or service providers.

Human Resource Management

  • Ensure the Community based facilitators have weekly and monthly targets.
  • Conduct weekly or monthly meeting to achieve targets.
  • Conduct staff appraisal/evaluation as per ZOA’s policy.
  • Provide technical support through coaching and mentorship of community-based facilitators for quality implementation of project activities.
  • Procurement and finance
  • Initiate timely purchase requisition of project goods/services.
  • Ensure expenses are in line with approved budget.
  • Provide appropriate codes for expenses.

Accountability

  • Sensitize all stakeholders (beneficiaries, service providers, partners, government and other) on feedback and complaint mechanisms implemented by ZOA Uganda
  • Upon receipt of a complaint or feedback, ensure that it is correctly documented following correct reporting procedures
  • Understand ZOA’s code of conduct and safeguarding policies, ensure adherence to these policies and that project activities are implemented with a “Do No Harm” approach

Essential Qualities

Essential Qualities

Knowledge & Experience:

  • Degree in Agricultural Sciences, Agribusiness, Agricultural Education, development studies, Project Planning & related fields; Specialized qualifications in agriculture, agri-business, financial inclusion welcomed
  • At least 3 years successful experience in a similar position implementing livelihoods related projects.
  • Good understanding of the Uganda context; experience in Refugee setting is a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following fields: Food security, land rights, inclusion and gender, lobby & advocacy, MEAL Understanding of the refugee context, culture, and languages as an added value.
  • Experience in localization approaches and working with local organizations
  • Experience in implementing community empowerment approach such as PIP is a plus.
  • A good command of English, including written reporting and activity reporting
  • Experience of working with People with Disabilities is a plus
  • Experience working in the refugee settlement context is a plus
