Job Description

The Finance Lead – Accounts, Compliance & Audit is responsible for ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and regulatory compliance of the company’s financial records, reporting, and internal control systems. This role oversees the financial accounting function and statutory compliance, internal and external audits, and implementation of IFRS-aligned policies and practices.

The Finance Lead will act as the company’s principal compliance officer and audit liaison, playing a critical role in maintaining financial governance and protecting institutional integrity. Working closely with the CEO, the Finance Lead will support the company’s strategic execution by ensuring sound financial stewardship and a robust control environment in a fast-scaling, multinational fintech lending operation.

Key Deliverables

1. Financial Accounting & Reporting

  • Manage the general ledger and subsidiary ledgers to ensure accurate and timely financial entries in compliance with IFRS.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow).
  • Ensure real-time and accurate recording of all transactions into the company’s ERP system, including receivables, payables, journal entries, and adjustments.
  • Reconcile all bank accounts, mobile money platforms, and inter-company accounts to maintain integrity in reported financials.
  • Prepare and present weekly and monthly finance reports for review by executive management, group finance, and external auditors.

2. Compliance & Statutory Reporting

  • Manage tax compliance, including preparation and submission of PAYE, VAT, WHT, and Corporation Tax, ensuring zero exposure to penalties.
  • Ensure compliance with other statutory requirements including AML/CFT reporting, NSSF, NHIF, and data protection obligations.
  • Monitor changes in financial regulations and accounting standards and implement necessary updates to internal policies and processes.

3. Internal Controls & Risk Management

  • Design, implement, and continuously improve internal controls to safeguard company assets and mitigate financial risks.
  • Regularly assess financial, operational, and compliance risks and recommend control enhancements.
  • Conduct internal control reviews and ensure timely implementation of audit recommendations.
  • Maintain an accurate fixed asset register, conduct periodic physical verification, and oversee depreciation schedules.

4. Audit Management (Internal & External)

  • Prepare audit-ready schedules and lead audit engagements, ensuring all audit queries are addressed promptly.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for external auditors, internal audit, regulators, and compliance officers.
  • Oversee documentation filing and archiving to ensure records are accessible and up to date.

5. Policy Development & Financial Governance

  • Develop and enforce finance, accounting, and compliance policies that reflect best practices and are aligned with IFRS guidelines.
  • Ensure staff adherence to policies through training, continuous support, and performance monitoring.

6. Leadership &  Team Management

  • Lead the accounts and compliance team, providing technical guidance, mentorship, and performance evaluations.
  • Set clear objectives and KPIs for team members and ensure they contribute to departmental goals.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, transparency, and ethical financial stewardship.

7. Stakeholder & External Relations

  • Manage relationships with external auditors, and other key regulatory stakeholders.
  • Represent the company during financial inspections, audit reviews, and compliance discussions.
  • Provide strategic insights to the CEO on financial and compliance health, and support sound decision-making with accurate data.

8. Any other duties allocated by the CEO or Board in relation to financial governance, audits, and compliance.

1. Audit & Financial Reporting Quality

  • External audit completed on time with zero material findings or repeat issues.
  • Monthly financial statements (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow) submitted by the 5th working day of the following month.

2. Regulatory & Statutory Compliance

  • 100% on-time filing of statutory returns with zero penalties or compliance breaches annually.

3. Reconciliation Accuracy & Timeliness

  • All bank, Mpesa, and intercompany reconciliations completed monthly by the
  • 3rd working day, with no backlog or unreconciled items over 30 days.

4. Internal Control & Risk Management

  • Internal audit/control review score of ≥90%, with all high-risk issues resolved within 30 days.
  • Fixed asset register fully reconciled with physical count twice annually.

5. Team Leadership & Performance

  • 90% of finance team achieving their individual KPIs each quarter.
  • At least 1 technical upskilling or policy training session conducted per quarter.


6. Strategic Finance Support

  • Monthly and quarterly finance reports submitted with strategic insights and recommendations for decision-making.
  • At least 2 approved financial or compliance process improvements implemented annually.

Essential Qualities

Essential Qualities

1. Education & Certification

o Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field from a recognized institution.

o CPA-K or ACCA qualification is mandatory.

o Postgraduate training in Audit, Risk, or Financial Management will be an added advantage.

2. Experience

o Minimum of 5 years progressive experience in accounting, audit, and compliance, ideally within a microfinance institution, regulated fintech, or financial services sector.

o Demonstrated experience in leading external and internal audits, preparing financial statements under IFRS.

o Proven track record in managing tax compliance, statutory reporting, and internal control environments.

3. Technical Expertise

o Deep, in-depth knowledge of accounting principles (IFRS) and internal audit standards.

o Advanced proficiency in financial modelling, analysis, and Excel-based tools.

o Hands-on experience with accounting systems.

o Familiarity with digital finance platforms, mobile disbursements, and reconciliation of fintech transaction systems.

4. Leadership & Strategic Thinking

o Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire, lead, and develop a high- performing finance and compliance team.

o Ability to interpret complex financial data, identify risks or irregularities, and make strategic recommendations for business continuity and control improvement.

o Proficient at driving policy development, enforcing accountability, and building finance governance structures.
