Job Description

The Incumbent will be responsible for overseeing a multidisciplinary design team, ensuring all designs are functional, compliant, cost-effective, and delivered on time. Key Deliverables

  • Analyse design and project specifications to generate accurate cost forecasts, while identifying potential cost-saving opportunities.
  • Attend project meetings to communicate design intent, resolve technical issues, and track design deliverables.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, identify skill gaps, and recommend training or professional development programs.
  • Coordinate design revisions based on production feedback, client input, and site conditions.
  • Ensure that all design outputs comply with applicable industry codes, health and safety regulations, and company standards.
  • Ensure that all estimations align with project margins and financial targets, without compromising on quality.
  • Guide the design process from conceptualization through to final documentation, ensuring compliance with engineering principles and client requirements.
  • Implement design validation and verification processes to minimize errors, rework, and material waste.
  • Lead the estimation process for projects, preparing comprehensive Bills of Materials, labour breakdowns, and material take-offs.
  • Maintain a master drawing register and ensure its consistent updating across all departments.
  • Maintain and update a cost database based on supplier quotes, past projects, and market trends.
  • Manage, coach and develop a high performing Maintenance team that meets agreed objectives and which delivers best practice results, added value and continuous improvements.
  • Monitor the completion of tasks and ensure good performance and record on appropriate systems.
  • Oversee the development of innovative and efficient designs across mechanical and joinery projects, ensuring manufacturability and aesthetic appeal.
  • Provide technical input during project planning, scheduling, and resource allocation.
  • Provide technical oversight, ensuring all drawings and outputs meet quality, accuracy, and regulatory standards.
  • Review and approve technical drawings, assembly details, material specifications, and production layouts created by design staff.
  • Set department objectives/KPIs and review and assess ongoing performance of direct reports.
  • Support, comply and ensure complicity with Health & Safety regulations, the Company Handbook, Quality and Environmental standards, and all other Company policies and procedures.
  • Work closely with the operations, procurement, and sales teams to align design deliverables with production capacity, client expectations, and project timelines.

Essential Qualities

Essential Qualities
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 12+ years of experience in design and estimation, preferably in manufacturing, sheet metal, joinery, or construction environments.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, ArchiCAD).
  • Strong command of cost estimation tools, material analysis, and production methods.
  • Proven leadership experience managing multi-disciplinary design teams.
