Overview
IMPACT is seeking a Communications and Advocacy Officer, based in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They will be responsible for implementing the organization's communications strategy and increasing the visibility of its project portfolio in the country.
The Communications and Advocacy Officer contributes to effective communication with stakeholders regarding project activities and results. The Communications Officer will produce website articles, social media posts, and printed materials, and will liaise with the media to promote projects and ensure their success. In addition, working closely with the local team and specialists, the Communications and Advocacy Officer participates in the preparation of a wide range of outreach materials and various reports for national and local beneficiaries.
The person filling this position will need the expertise to bring together stakeholders with differing viewpoints on sensitive issues. They will support stakeholder engagement (including local communities, the private sector, and policymakers) and advocacy efforts at the local and national levels to promote sustainable change in the DRC's artisanal mining sector. They will work closely with the Program team, the Country Representative, and other members of the communications team based in the DRC and abroad.

In coordination with the Director of Communications, the Country Representative, and the Program team, the Communications and Advocacy Officer develops and implements the communications strategy for the projects in their portfolio, thereby contributing to the implementation of IMPACT's communications strategy in the DRC. The incumbent liaises with members of the communications and project teams to produce and provide content for IMPACT's editorial calendar. In coordination with members of the Program team, they ensure the promotion of activities in the country to achieve strategic objectives and contribute to the development of outreach materials. They support stakeholder engagement and implement advocacy activities to support project objectives.
External communication
- In collaboration with members of the Program team, identify the activities, results and success stories of beneficiaries that deserve to be told.
- Gather information through interviews, photos and videos in order to write high-quality and engaging content for various stakeholders (local, national and international).
- Collaborating with project implementation partners for communication needs and support for their communication plans on IMPACT projects.
- Liaise with the communications team to contribute to the editorial calendar, and produce content for social media accounts and the website.
- Manage local contract staff responsible for creative work, including photographers and videographers, in liaison with the Programme team to prepare creative briefs that meet expectations.
- Mobilize the media to attend events organized as part of the projects and inform them of the results.
- To orchestrate the placement of advertisements in the media.
- Coordinate the production of printed materials, and liaise with graphic designers and printers.
Raising awareness among participants about the projects
- In collaboration with the Programme team, identify relevant methods and tools to raise awareness among target audiences.
- Participate in the development of key messages.
- Coordinate the production of quality awareness-raising materials, including, among other things, brochures, posters, radio messages, advertisements, banners.
- Participate in the preparation of awareness-raising strategies.
Advocacy
As part of a new IMPACT project aimed at improving security around mining areas in the future Lobito corridor in southern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and promoting an environment conducive to the peaceful coexistence of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) and industrial mining, the Communications and Advocacy Officer will be responsible for:
- Support the design and implementation of the project's advocacy strategy at the local, provincial and national levels.
- Facilitating multi-stakeholder dialogue between communities, local authorities, mining companies and civil society.
- Develop evidence-based advocacy documents and tools that take into account community priorities.
- Supporting the creation of coalitions and the mobilization of stakeholders.
- Train community members, local leaders and civil society in communication and advocacy.
Strategy, reporting and knowledge sharing
- In coordination with the Director of Communications, the Country Representative and the Programme team, implement the communication strategy for the Democratic Republic of Congo and projects implemented in the country, taking into account in particular IMPACT's national strategy.
- Reporting on project communication activities in accordance with donor expectations.
- Monitor media coverage of projects and report on it to staff and funders.
- Conduct a brand image audit of IMPACT and implement the related guidelines in all activities carried out in the country in collaboration with the Country Representative and the program team.
- Liaise with the communications team to promote regular knowledge sharing and coordinate activities.
- Coordinate with DRC team members to seize opportunities for communication and project promotion.
