Job Description

Kakenya’s Dream (KD) seeks to empower and motivate young girls through education and health to become agents of change and to break the cycle of destructive cultural practices in Kenya, such as female genital mutilation and early forced marriage. Job summary: Communications Officer is responsible for supporting all communication initiatives at Kakenya’s Dream (KD). The Job holder will also assist in creating and raising awareness, increasing the visibility of the organization among stakeholders and disseminates appropriate messages to relevant audiences (both internally and externally). He/she documents the organization’s program work to support resource mobilization, case studies, experiences, lessons and best practices.

Location: Kakenya’s Dream field office located at Isampin, Transmara West, Narok County.

Key Deliverables

  1. Communication Planning and Implementation
  • Assist in development and implementation of strategies, standards, guidelines, and policies for Communications.
  • Assist in development and implementation of annual management plans, work plans and budgets for Communications unit.
  • Write, edit, and distribute content to promote Kakenya’s Dream brand, products and activities.
  • Assist in production and distribution of newsletter, publications and general updates.
  • Compile and share updates on activities with relevant stakeholders and audiences to build and maintain a positive image of the organization and its work.
  • Assist in design, production, publication and distribution of corporate, Information Education Communication (IEC) and special projects materials, documentation and documentaries to enhance Kakenya’s Dream’s visibility, image and work.
  • Collect content for the organization’s social media pages, blog, website, newsletters, and other communication channels.
  • Capture and produce pictures, audio and video recordings for documentation purposes and for information dissemination to stakeholders and target audiences.
  • Assist departments in finalization of writing; proofreading, editing and compilation of all external communications materials, correspondence and publications.
  • Provide data and information to support fundraising and resource mobilization; giving input to concept notes and proposals writing and other fundraising initiatives.
  • Participate and produce reports that capture KD’s performance in strategic partnership and alliances for campaign and advocacy on common grounds with relevant parties and forums.
  • Assist in timely submission of communication material for project reporting as per work plans and activity schedule.
  • Ensure proper management, use and good stewardship of entrusted resources.
    2. Media and Public Engagement
  • Assist in writing and editing content for a wide range of audiences and contexts, including case studies, briefs, articles, website content, newsletters and impact publications.
  • Work closely with the program team to capture, document and store program progress, stories, experiences, best practices and lessons learned on the organization’s work for publicity and archiving.
  • Support staff with eye catching design of reports, presentations and documents for effective data and information dissemination and capture of audiences.
  • Assist in placement of advertisements in the media.
  • Assist in marketing, branding and visibility initiatives, ensuring consistency in identity and messaging and ensure sponsored and supported events and activities have relevant branded materials.
  • Provide appropriate responses to approved requests for information and enquiries about Kakenya’s Dream’s work.
  • Represent the organization at relevant meetings and events.
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with media houses to promote Kakenya’s Dream’s profile and work, proactively securing media opportunities and ensure the organization responds as appropriate.

3. Digital Engagement & Content Creation

  • Assist in creating content for social media platforms, podcasts and websites to promote the organization’s work, with focus to local – Kenya operations/focus audience.
  • Tell the stories of Kakenya’s Dream programs and work; successes, experiences and lessons through digital products and platforms.
  • Collect stories and build a creative content bank (gallery/library/ archives) that capture Kakenya’s Dream’s work through photos, videos, audios, graphics, info-graphics, documentaries, publications, reports among others.
  • Work closely with the MEL unit in documentation, presentation and sharing of Kakenya’s Dream’s case studies, experiences, lessons and best practices to enhance its work and engagement

4.Carry out any other duties and responsibilities which may be assigned by the Supervisor from time to time

Essential Qualities
  • Post graduate training in photography, videography, graphic design and social media management is an added advantage.

Relevant Work Experience

  • At least two (2) years’ experience in communications and public relations with focus in working with the development sector and rural communities, preferably in the NGO sector

Competencies/Abilities/Skills Required

  • Very good planning and organizational skills.
  • Motivated and energetic self-starter who takes initiative, with good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with respect for diversity.
  • Team player with very good networking, negotiation and persuasion skills.
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Kiswahili is essential, as well as a critical eye for editing and grammar.
  • Attention to details and ability to work under pressure and deliver under minimal supervision.
  • A creative writer, with the ability to write easy to read narratives on various topics.
  • Good report writing and presentation skills.
  • Strong ICT skills and working knowledge of computer applications and social media that promote communications and public relations; digital media, photography, graphic design and video production skills.
  • Experience using social media tools and channels, particularly blogging and content management systems.
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation, and shows interest and enthusiasm in their work, while exhibiting the ability to learn new software in their area of work.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to remote locations.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines, under minimal supervision.
  • Experience in working with donor-funded projects especially those in gender, women and girls focus areas is an added advantage.
