Job Description

To safely and efficiently lead the operation of the Auto Bagging facilities within the Emulsions and Tank Farm To safely and efficiently operate and control Tank Farm activities within the Nitrates plant, ensuring the safe receipt, storage, transfer, and dispatch of raw materials and finished products.

The role is responsible for maintaining product integrity, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards, supporting production continuity, and managing tank farm operations in a high-risk chemical manufacturing environment

Key Deliverables

  • Comply fully with plant safety rules, SOPs, and permit-to-work systems.
  • Conduct risk assessments (SLAM/Take 5) prior to task execution.
  • Ensure correct PPE usage and safe handling of hazardous chemicals.
  • Monitor tank farm operations for potential safety or environmental risks.
  • Report incidents, near misses, spills, and unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Ensure compliance with legal, ISO, and site-specific SHE standards.
  • Participate in emergency response activities, including spill containment and evacuation
  • procedures.
  • Tank Farm Operations
  • Operate and monitor bulk storage tanks, pumps, pipelines, and transfer systems.
  • Manage receipt and offloading of raw materials from road tankers or rail wagons.
  • Coordinate internal transfers between storage tanks and production units.
  • Ensure correct product identification and segregation to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Monitor tank levels, temperatures, pressures, and flow rates.
  • Perform routine inspections of tanks, bund walls, valves, and pipelines.

 

Professional Qualifications

Industry Qualification
Compliance, Risk Management, and Regulatory Affairs Grade 12 (Matric) Chemical Plant Operations qualification (advantageous) N3–N6 Electrical, Mechanical, or Instrumentation Engineering (advantageous) SHE training (advantageous) 1–2 years’ experience in chemical or high-risk manufacturing environment Experience in bulk liquid handling and tank farm operations Experience with pumps, pipelines, and industrial transfer systems Experience working shifts

Production Support

 

  • Ensure timely and uninterrupted supply of materials to the plant.
  • Support production schedules by coordinating tank changeovers and transfers.
  • Minimise downtime through proactive monitoring and troubleshooting.
  • Liaise with production and logistics teams to ensure smooth operations.

 

Quality Control

 

  • Verify product specifications prior to transfer or dispatch.
  • Ensure sampling procedures are followed as per quality requirements.
  • Prevent contamination and maintain product integrity.
  • Accurately record tank movements, transfers, and stock levels.

 

Equipment & Maintenance Support

 

  • Conduct daily equipment inspections and basic troubleshooting.
  • Report defects and coordinate with Maintenance for repairs.
  • Ensure pumps, valves, and instrumentation are functioning correctly.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards within the Tank Farm area.

 

Documentation & Reporting

 

  • Maintain accurate logs of receipts, transfers, and dispatches.
  • Update tank inventory records and reconcile stock variances.
  • Complete shift reports and communicate handover information effectively.

 

Housekeeping and Operational Discipline

 

  • Maintain high housekeeping standards throughout all bagging areas.
  • Ensure compliance with operational procedures, work instructions, and documentation requirements.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to optimise efficiency and reduce waste.
