Job Summary: The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is seeking a Communications Coordinator to strengthen the external and internal communications activities of the Okapi Wildlife Reserve program in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Communications Coordinator will develop, implement, and update the communications and behavior change strategy—including branding and marketing aspects—with target audiences at the local, provincial, national, and international levels. After two years, success in this role will be defined by: increased and shared understanding—and greater buy-in—of the Reserve's values, mission, and objectives among target audiences; measurable changes in knowledge, behaviors, and practices among target audiences; stakeholders regularly informed of Okapi Wildlife Reserve news; improved messaging coordination and internal communication among Okapi Wildlife Reserve partners; strengthened internal communications capacity; and an operational and agile Communications Unit. The Communications Coordinator will be based on-site at the Reserve Headquarters in Epulu, Ituri Province. Main Tasks and Responsibilities: Leadership and Management of the Unit - Manage the Communications Unit and ensure capacity building in communications and mentoring of team members and RFO partners, as appropriate. Foster a culture of participatory learning and adaptive problem-solving so that RFO team members reflect on and design effective tools and coverage of field interventions that produce visibility results. Ensure a clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the Communications Unit and manage the activity schedule. Implement and enforce the validation processes for outputs of the Communications Unit.

Essential Qualities

Essential Qualities
  • 5 to 10 years of experience in developing and implementing communication strategies;
  • Significant experience in press relations at local, national and international levels;
  • Proven experience in engaging diverse target audiences through a wide range of modern communication tools and means (social networks, newsletters, print, media, displays, photography, audiovisual, radio, TV) as well as in the relationship with various communication service providers (graphic designers, printers, photographers, video editors, etc.);
  • Proven experience in coordinating a communication unit, in inter-partner coordination, in managing crisis communication situations;
  • A thorough understanding of the tools that can be used to measure the success of communication strategies (desirable);
  • An understanding of biodiversity conservation issues (highly desirable);
  • A proactive, positive and responsible approach to the work to be done;
  • A demonstrated openness and sensitivity to the socio-cultural environment of the RFO;
  • Fluent in French and English; good working skills in Swahili will be considered an asset;
    Willingness to spend extended periods in the field, sometimes in basic conditions
