Job Description

The Legal Projects Officer will be responsible for ensuring the legal compliance of our disciplinary case management system, working closely with the C&I team in managing reimbursement investigations for legal compliance and efficiency. They will also work on resolving cases of fraud and misconduct, leading recovery actions for misappropriated funds across Burundi. The Legal Projects Officer will manage the relationship between the OAF and the legal counsel and will monitor cases before the courts.

Key Deliverables

Advise human resources on disciplinary measures and the management of fraud cases

  • For disciplinary actions resulting from field and headquarters investigations, advise based on the current understanding of the facts and legal requirements.
  • Coordinate and evaluate the work of external counsel in the context of defending cases of unfair dismissal and civil judgments.
  • Participate regularly in HR working groups, if necessary, to manage these issues.
  • To increase and strengthen the process of recovering embezzled funds
  • Supporting the management of legal matters related to reimbursement and legal proceedings
  • Train teams of investigators on legal requirements, internal expectations, tools and processes necessary to conduct a good investigation.

Managing large-scale investigations

  • Conduct thorough investigations into major fraud or serious misconduct committed outside of the field team. 
  • Mastering the investigation plan, existing documents, and conducting confrontation interviews. 
  • To provide advice on practical and legal issues related to human resources policies and disciplinary measures.
  • Lead an effective hearing committee and provide clear advice and recommendations on the decision to be taken at the request of the head of the division in charge of personnel.

Ensuring the legal compliance of our internal laws

  • Identify significant opportunities in labor legislation or policy through its ability to conduct a gap analysis in law or compliance;
  • Coordinate with the manager the integration of new opportunities into our catalogue of policies and procedures.
  • Collaborating with the external relations team on drafting memoranda of understanding and contracts with government partners and aligning with global legal counsel, particularly for agreements that carry legal or reputational risk.
  •  Providing legal advice and analysis to the division managers in charge of personnel and ensuring that we remain compliant with labor law.
  • Collaborating with the global legal department to review large-scale contracts and providing advice on compliance with Burundian rules and regulations. 

Supporting partners in managing disputes against One Acre Fund

  • To be the primary operational partner for external advisors and lawyers in managing all litigation before the courts.
  • Maintain close contact and communicate with our legal counsel regarding the court proceedings schedule.
  • Working in partnership with external lawyers and supporting them in court 
  • Represent One Acre Fund regularly at police stations or courts at the request of the manager and management.

Professional Qualifications

Industry Qualification
Product & Project Management We are seeking an exceptional professional with at least two years of professional experience in the legal field as a lawyer, legal advisor, or auditor, and a passion for the development of the agricultural sector. Candidates who meet the following criteria are strongly encouraged to apply: Bachelor of Laws degree or Bachelor of Laws degree 2 years or more of experience in the fields of law, investigations or auditing. Expertise in resolving cases of fraud and misconduct within a large organization or as an external expert. A solid legal background with the ability to manage an evolving portfolio of high-risk and complex legal risk cases. Experience as a corporate/international organization lawyer, auditor or legal advisor would be an asset. Proven experience in managing other investigators or audits Knowledge of Burundian labor law and disciplinary case management Fluent in French and English.
