Technical Lead for East Africa Conserving the Western Indian Ocean Activity

Responsibilities:
- Provide technical leadership and overall management of Objective 2, including supervision of key field staff and consultants, and coordination with local partners;
- Provide expert technical input to development of strategic objectives relevant to community-led approaches to co-management and devolved authority for coastal fisheries management;
- Oversee field implementation regionally and at community-level related to co-management of fisheries, with activities including establishment and capacity building of local fisheries management bodies, development and implementation of management plans that are gender- and climate-responsive, monitoring of management effectiveness, community surveillance and enforcement systems, and livelihoods and financial inclusion efforts;
- Collaborate closely with other Technical leads to ensure seamless and integrated implementation of the overall Activity;
- Travel within the region to support site- and regional-level implementation as needed
Qualifications:
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in fisheries, biology, marine biology, environmental science, social science, community development or relevant field; a master’s degree is a plus;
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience and proven track record in assisting local governments and/or building organizational capacities of environmental/fisheries management organizations, community-based people’s organizations, and/or NGOs;
- Demonstrated field-based program management experience;
- Knowledge of integrating/mainstreaming gender and climate change into community-based fisheries co-management systems
- Strong network of regional and local government, NGO and civil society within the marine/coastal fisheries sector in focus geography, which may include Kenya, Somalia, the Seychelles, Comoros, South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Mauritius, and Madagascar; and
- Excellent communication skills in English. Foreign language ability a plus.
